Botulinum toxin is slowly metabolized by the body and when precisely injected into small facial and neck muscles works only where injected. Botulinum toxin has been used safely, even in children, for non-cosmetic purposes, since the 1980's. Relatively small doses of Botulinum toxin are used for cosmetic treatments. There are no known long term side-effects.

In the US the age indication for botulinum toxin injections is 20-45years of age, however we feel this is premature. In our experience, patients normally begin to request botulinum toxin injections in their late 20s-early 30s when fine lines and wrinkles begin to appear, most commonly frown lines/crow's feet. It is important to remember that these injections are a preventative treatment rather than a curative one, ie. If lines are allowed become engrained in the skin they can not be softened by botulinum toxin injections alone, this would require a 'triple therapy' approach ie, a combination of Fraxel laser resurfacing, Botulinum toxin injections and filler. Therefore prevention is better than cure.

In most cases, no one will know you have had a treatment at all! Botulinum toxin treatment is really a lunch-time procedure. Bruising can occur but is uncommon and usually minor. We use ice to minimize both discomfort and swelling, but most patients are amazed at how quick and simple Botulinum toxin injection treatment really is.

There are many different IPL devices on the market. Some spa-grade IPL devices are under-powered and can’t perform as promised. No because a glycolic acid peel is a superficial peel and such an even exfoliation is achieved that the patients skin does not peel.

Fillers are mainly injected into mid and lower face to fill out wrinkles and restore lost volume. The patient can bruise after fillers so we recommend that you stop Aspirin, Anti-inflammatories such as 'Difene', Alcohol and Fish Oils one week before the treatment and also start Arnica tablets one week beforehand to help minimise the risk of bruising. If a bruise occurs it can last between 5-8 days depending on the severity, so have a good concealer to hand for camouflage.

Sun damage occurs to the skin over time, primarily from the effects of solar ultraviolet radiation. Radiation damage degrades the collagen or protein deep in our skin. This leads to loosening of the skin and sagging as well as discolouration through pigment changes and the development of facial red veins. There are a number of treatments available for sun damaged skin including Fraxel and Intense Pulsed Light lasers. These lasers are particularly effective in the treatment of sun damaged skin, as they stimulate collagen production, reduce the age-related irregular pigmentation and red veins, thereby overall skin tone is dramatically improved. Many over the counter and prescription topical preparations have been developed and marketed to both prevent and treat ageing skin, some of which have a true longstanding scientific base, such as retinoic acid, antioxidants, glycolic acid, lactic acid, pentapeptides, tissue growth factors. Others however have little or no scientific facts to support their extravagant claims other than powerful multi million dollar advertising campaigns!

Unfortunately Celtic skin ages the quickest of all skin types and is also the most sensitive skin type in the world. Here in lies the problem, as many proven 'anti-aging' products can be very irritating so it's essential to use products that suit your skin type. Stick to your own personalised prescriptive at-home skin care regime for best results without irritation. Finally, the most important anti-aging product you should use is sunscreen, and it may take a certain degree of trial and error for you to find the perfect one, but it's well worth the effort.

Absolutely, there is strong evidence from studies carried out in the UK suggesting that daily use of sunscreen from April-September can more than halve the effects of unprotected sun exposure in a 70 year lifespan.

Considering that sun damage can account for up to 90% of the negative effects of skin ageing, its seems logical to use sunscreens. It is also essential to apply adequate amounts of sunscreens as it is estimated that we apply approximately 1/3 of the recommended amount and hence are not as protected as we think.

Finally sunscreens can cause skin irritation or allergy, in which case stick to a physical block which can have a slightly chalky feel however is very inert and much less likely to cause an adverse skin reaction.
