Filler

What is it?

Filler is made from pure crosslinked hyaluronic acid gel that mimics your own natural hyaluronic acid which gives plumpness to the skin. From the age of 25 years onwards your skin begins to lose its natural hyaluronic acid and collagen making it less resilient and more prone to fine lines and wrinkles. This coupled with deflation of facial fat pads can give the face a hollow or gaunt look.

Filler is used to replace lost volume on the face, most notably the nasolabial folds, perioral lines, the cheeks and temples.

Once injected, filler binds to water in the skin and stimulates the production of collagen, thereby plumping the skin and restoring a more youthful appearance.

At the Dr. Mulrooney clinic we use two main types of filler; Belotero and Radiesse. Belotero contains 100% pure hyaluronic acid and it is a beautiful smooth filler that is safe to use in most areas of the face. Its subtle plumping effects last 6-9 months. Radiesse contains pure hyaluronic acid PLUS a calcium molecule that stimulates collagen production. Radiesse is only suitable for the treatment of hollowing cheeks, hollow marionette lines and along the jawline. It is not suitable for finer more superficial injections. Its plumping affects last 12-18 months. A combination of both of these filler works well for facial rejuvenation.

Who can benefit?

It works well on patients who report a hollowing out of their face or a gauntness, fine lines or wrinkles around the mouth and also on facial asymmetry and scarring.

What it entails

A filler treatment takes approx. 1 hour. The patient is numbed for 30 minutes, the area is then cleansed and sterilised, marked and finally injected. Post injection, ice packs are applied for a minimum of 15 minutes to minimise swelling and bruising.
It is advised NOT to apply makeup for the rest of that day to avoid contamination of the fresh injection sites.
Concealer and makeup can be used the next day and I recommend Vichy Dermablend range for excellent coverage, which is available in most pharmacies.

Downtime

There is swelling and redness post filler that lasts 2-3 hours.

There is also a 50% risk of bruising post filler and if bruising occurs it can last for up to one week.

To minimise the risk of bruising we advise patient to start taking arnica tablets and stop aspirin, anti inflammatories and fish oil for five days beforehand.

Filler work well with Botox and lasers and is the core treatment for facial rejuvenation.
