PRP: Platelet Rich Plasma

What is it?

Platlet Rich Plasma (PRP) or “The Vampire Facial”, made famous by Kim Kardashian, involves taking a small vial of blood from a patients arm, spinning the blood in a centrifuge to separate the red blood cells from the golden coloured platlet rich plasma. The nutrient rich, platlet rich plasma is then reinjected back into the skin on the face, neck or hands to stimulate new collagen, improve fine lines wrinkles and boost skin clarity. Also, it can be safely injected in the delicate eye area to improve dark circles and hollowness in this area.

What is involved?

The big appeal of this treatment is that it is 100% natural so the risk of an adverse reaction is minimal.

The procedure takes 40 minutes. Numbing cream is applied to the area that is to be treated and left for 20 minutes. Blood is taken from the patients arm and spun and then reinjected back into desired area. There is mild swelling and bruising after the treatment.

It is advised NOT to apply makeup for the rest of that day to avoid contamination of the fresh injection sites. Concealer and makeup can be used the next day.

Downtime

There is swelling and redness post filler that lasts 2-3 hours.

There is also a 50% risk of bruising post filler and if bruising occurs it can last for up to one week.

To minimise the risk of bruising we advise patient to start taking arnica tablets and stop aspirin, anti inflammatories and fish oil for five days beforehand.

Filler work well with Botox and lasers and is the core treatment for facial rejuvenation.

Who can benefit?

Any patient who has ageing concerns (30-80 years) who wants to stimulate their collagen and elastin, treat fine lines and wrinkles and boost skin luminosity in the most natural way possible. This treatment uses the patient’s own blood and no man-made filler or botulinum toxin are injected into the face. The big appeal of this treatment is that it is 100% natural so risk of adverse reactions is minimal and it is "self-rejuvenation" at its best.
